The original sin of the British post-war economy is the nation’s persistent underperformance with regards to productivity. Since the financial crisis, chronic productivity shortcomings have continued to plague Britain, serving as the principal barrier to the achievement of broad prosperity and creating an unignorable feeling of disillusionment amongst working class voters. The path to a solution must pass through a variety of complex issues, with a crisis in housing and the necessity of radical NHS reform providing major obstacles. Regardless of the outcome of negotiations in Brussels, this will remain the most fundamental challenge facing policymakers and will represent the battleground for warring ideologies. The next era in British politics will be defined by its success in positioning the nation to excel during the transformative Fourth Industrial Revolution. This cannot be achieved without the formulation of an effective industrial policy to rejuvenate productivity and prevent another lost decade.
