Teaching Methodology for Breath-Centered, Individualized Yoga

We are delighted to welcome back one the worlds leading yoga teachers and anatomy experts Leslie Kaminoff for a another special visit to Cambridge.
This will be his third time at Camyoga and he is bringing all new material for two separate two day workshops, including asana practice alongside theory and breath-work

Workshop one «Teaching Methodology for Breath-Centered, Individualised Yoga”
is a two day workshop aimed at teachers, trainee teachers, advanced students thinking of becoming a yoga teacher and those who have previously studied leslies online yoga anatomy courses.

In honor of his teacher, T.K.V. Desikachar, Leslie has designed a two-day immersion especially for practicing yoga teachers and teachers in training. Drawing from decades of practice notes, Leslie has created these sessions to explore key elements of Desikachar’s teaching approach.

SESSION DESCRIPTIONS
Thursday 9:30am-12:30pm
Yoga is Relationship: The Legacy of T.K.V. Desikachar

T.K.V. Desikachar (1938-2016), was the son of the legendary yogi T. Krishnamacharya (1888-1989). His therapeutic approach to the teaching of yoga emphasized the importance of genuine connection. “Yoga is relationship,” he would often remind his students – the relationship between the teacher and student, and the relationship between the body and the breath. The morning session will introduce a simple asana and vinyasa practice which will serve as a base from which participants can dive deeper into the subtleties of body and breath in yoga practice.

2:00-5:00pm
Teaching to the Individual: Fundamental Concepts and Language Choices
During the afternoon session we will revisit the morning practice sequence, modeling language choices that allow each student in a group of any size to take possession of their own experience. For conscientious teachers of yoga, there is always a balance to strike while leading group practice: the class needs to move forward in a cohesive manner but individual students frequently need personal attention to keep their practice safe and effective. Leslie will address how to create a safe teaching environment for students of any background including trauma, disability or injury.

Friday
9:30am-12:30pm and 2:00-5:00pm
Adapting Body and Breath: Teaching Strategies for Groups and Individuals
The morning practice session will revisit the previous day’s sequence, adding layers of complexity, modification and adaptation to posture, breath and mental focus. Leslie will lead an inquiry that deconstructs segments of the sequence, addressing individual concerns and responses of class participants. By observing Leslie's individualized work and practicing the modifications as a group, students will experience firsthand how richly varied a student’s exploration can be, even in a structured group practice.

In the afternoon Leslie will explore the creative use of imagery as well as unstructured, non-linear breath and movement. Students will have the chance to practice these new teaching strategies on each other, working in small groups. In an atmosphere of safety and inquiry, new language and strategies can be explored with feedback of fellow students.

Participants will leave the workshop with a new perspective on teaching concepts and methods they can explore in their own practice and share with their students.
